Call for applications : Master of Landscape Architecture program

The Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program seeks to advance the study of urban ecology and design by addressing contemporary challenges in the field, including climate change, deteriorating infrastructure, brownfield reclamation, urban agriculture, and shifting populations.

This LAAB-accredited degree program offers a three–year curriculum for students without prior design education; those with a degree in landscape architecture or architecture may receive advanced placement, thus reducing their course work by one or two semesters. In addition, students may pursue a variety of joint professional degrees, including in architecture (MArch), urban design (MUD), and other programs across the University.

The MLA program is committed to interdisciplinary excellence, uniting art, science, and the humanities within Washington University’s tradition of academic distinction. Students are encouraged to develop their own research interests and pursue collaborative work. The curriculum is centered on studio teaching and supported by instruction in technology, natural systems, history/theory, and representation. The core studios examine a series of landscape problems that increase in scale and complexity, from site to region. In the advanced studios, students apply core principles in representation, analysis, and ecology to design work, demonstrating independent thinking as landscape architects.

The MLA program draws on a unique set of institutional and regional resources that includes:
– The Sam Fox School Public Lecture Series
– Washington University programs in environmental studies, environmental engineering, and American culture studies, as well as its ecological field station at Tyson Research Center
– Missouri Botanical Garden, Forest Park, Donald Danforth Plan Science Center, and The Nature Conservancy

The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts is an interdisciplinary and diverse community of architects, artists, and designers dedicated to excellence in learning, creative activity, research, and exhibition. Our unique structure allows us to build on the strengths of each unit—Art, Architecture, and Museum—and to draw on the resources of the University to create new knowledge and address the social and environmental challenges of our time.

Washington University in St. Louis is counted among the world’s leaders in teaching and research, and draws students and faculty to St. Louis from all 50 states and more than 120 nations. Highly regarded for its commitment to excellence in learning, its programs, administration, facilities, resources, and activities combine to further its mission of teaching, research, and service to society. The University has played an integral role in the history and continuing growth of St. Louis and benefits in turn from the wide array of social, cultural, and recreational opportunities offered by the metropolitan area to its nearly three million residents.
