Call for applications : Master of Landscape Architecture program

The Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program seeks to advance the study of urban ecology and design by addressing contemporary challenges in the field, including climate change, deteriorating infrastructure, brownfield reclamation, urban agriculture, and shifting populations.

This LAAB-accredited degree program offers a three–year curriculum for students without prior design education; those with a degree in landscape architecture or architecture may receive advanced placement, thus reducing their course work by one or two semesters. In addition, students may pursue a variety of joint professional degrees, including in architecture (MArch), urban design (MUD), and other programs across the University.

The MLA program is committed to interdisciplinary excellence, uniting art, science, and the humanities within Washington University’s tradition of academic distinction. Students are encouraged to develop their own research interests and pursue collaborative work. The curriculum is centered on studio teaching and supported by instruction in technology, natural systems, history/theory, and representation. The core studios examine a series of landscape problems that increase in scale and complexity, from site to region. In the advanced studios, students apply core principles in representation, analysis, and ecology to design work, demonstrating independent thinking as landscape architects.

The MLA program draws on a unique set of institutional and regional resources that includes:
– The Sam Fox School Public Lecture Series
– Washington University programs in environmental studies, environmental engineering, and American culture studies, as well as its ecological field station at Tyson Research Center
– Missouri Botanical Garden, Forest Park, Donald Danforth Plan Science Center, and The Nature Conservancy
