UK based artists from all disciplines and ages are invited to apply with a proposal for artwork for the Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay. (www.tidallagoonswanseabay.com)
Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay will be the world’s first, purpose-built, tidal energy lagoon, capable of generating predictable, renewable electricity for over 120,000 homes for over 120 years. A 16 km causeway, with tidal generators will be built out into Swansea Bay – creating a dynamic walkway complete with visitor centre, viewing platforms and sport and marine science stations.
Writers, sculptors, video/media artists, poets, sound-artists, light-artists, – all artists are welcome to hand in their ideas.
We invite concept ideas for robust or temporal artworks that refer to the ambition of the lagoon or the cultural/environmental heritage of the area to be submitted by 1st May 2014.
6 of the concept proposals will be shortlisted, and an award of £ 2.5k for each proposal will be granted to enable the concept idea to be developed and worked up for the final competition.
The shortlist for the 6 commissions will be announced at Hay Festival June 2014.
Two finalists will be chosen and announced 1st January 2015. There will be a budget in excess of £ 20k to realise each of the two winning proposals.
We are inviting the Swansea community (all ages, disciplines) to get involved in shaping the space around the tidal lagoon Swansea Bay (www.tidallagoonswanseabay.com) and contribute with their ideas to enhance it. The best ideas will be realized on site. The proposals can be anything that will benefit and inspire the local community in relation to culture, sport and education. The kick off for the competition is the 22nd of January at the ‘Next Steps’ event: www.tidallagoonswanseabay.com/news-and-events-detail
Concept ideas for the Lagoon will be showcased in the Swansea Museum (tbc). A general coordinator will be appointed to guide this process. Presentation budgets will be available through the Swansea Lagoon organisation.
The exhibition of proposals will be shown from August-October 2014.
The best ideas in the exhibition will be selected in October and realized on the Lagoon site throughout 2014/2015.
Deadline for proposals: 1st of May 2014.
