Expressions of Interest
Sauerbier House is a state heritage community asset transformed from domestic residence (originally George Sauerbier c.1897) into a culturally inclusive contemporary artspace dedicated to the creation of living cultural dialogues and local creative exchange. Situated near the Onkaparinga River or Ngangkiparingga, (‘Women’s River’; Kaurna), in the beachside town of Port Noarlunga, the colonial villa now contains artists’ studios and exhibition spaces, and offers artist in residency and exhibition opportunities to local and visiting contemporary artists.
Artist in Residence (AiR) Program July 2018-June 2019
Expressions of interest are currently being sought from sole or collaborative contemporary artists working in any medium, to participate in a three month supported site-responsive artist in residency program. Artists are provided with studio space and in-house support to achieve a resolved exhibition at the conclusion of their tenure. Artists are expected to engage with visitors to the house and facilitate opportunities for the community to participate with their process.
Sustainability
For artists with a conceptual or material focus on sustainability (in particular, climate change) an additional opportunity has been generated to incorporate access to the City of Onkaparinga’s Sustainability team to further inform their practice.
Council has been working for many years to prepare for changes to our climate, and the artists will be supported to collaborate with diverse staff including senior strategic planners, engineers, community relations staff, natural resource managers, and biodiversity specialists.
Staff will help translate the technical data used to plan for climate change such as urban heat mapping, flood mapping, 3D coastal modelling, tree canopy mapping and more. The way the data is currently mapped is surprisingly beautiful in its own right and council staff are excited about sharing it with artists, exchanging ideas, learning from each other, and discovering how the artists will respond. All residencies conclude with a supported exhibition hosted at Sauerbier House.
Applications close Friday 27 October 2017.
The selection of AiR applicants is overseen by the Sauerbier House Reference Group.
