CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: INTERNATIONAL ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAMME – LUXEMBOURG

PAE International Production Residencies for Artists, Fonds Belval, Luxembourg

Six production residencies in Belval, Luxembourg, will be awarded to international artists.

Fonds Belval has initiated Public Art Experience, a ten year long cultural strategy, which sets out to engage the public in the transformation of Belval through an innovative programme of international production residencies. Stéphanie Delcroix and Michael Pinsky have been selected as the artistic directors for the first series of residencies.

Belval is the site of a former steelworks which has received heritage status. The factory and its blast furnaces have been largely preserved whilst new buildings are being constructed in and around its edifice. Fonds Belval, the public body in charge of the building works, is now turning the fallow site into the Cité des Sciences, an important scientific and cultural centre, including the University of Luxembourg.

BeHave, the title of the inaugural residencies, reflects on possible ways of being together in the specific context of the regeneration of Belval. In English, the word behave juxtaposes the auxiliaries be and have to mean the act of containing oneself and showing respect for others.

Firstly, BeHave questions the “order of things’ and the role the artist can play in disrupting what are considered to be norms: in terms of urban planning, the objects which surround us, societal behaviour, molecular interaction and software programming. Secondly, BeHaveisolates the words be and have to suggest that Beval oscillates between two worlds, the material and historical world and the immaterial and intellectual world.

Exhibition and dissemination

Artists need to consider how to make facets of their practice visible to the public and how their work will be manifested during and after the residency.

The outcomes of the residencies will be sited within Belval and accessible to the public from August 2016 – December 2016.

The residencies and associated commissions will be documented and disseminated through a comprehensive programme of public events and conferences, publications and films.

Details of the residencies

Six residencies will run between September 2015 and August 2016:

Two three-month residences providing an honorarium of €14,000
Two six-month residences providing an honorarium of €28,000
Two nine-month residences providing an honorarium of €42,000

A significant production budget will be allocated to each residency. A studio space will be provided on-site, as well as accommodation up to the value of €1000 a month.

Application guidelines

A document providing context and detailing the concept for the first residencies is available online here.

Applications must include:

  • A Curriculum Vitae
  • Ten images of past work and projects contained within a single PDF with a size of no more than 3mb.
  • A statement, no longer than 2 sides of A4, describing an outline idea of how the artist would engage with site and make aspects of their practice visible to the public. It is understood that at this point that the artist will most probably be unfamiliar with the site and that his/her approach is liable to change during the residency.
  • Preferred length of residency

Applications to be submitted to Le Fonds Belval by email at fb(at)fonds-belval.lu by 12:00 noon (CET) on 23 January 2015

Selection process

The artists’ applications will be shortlisted by the artistic directors Stéphanie Delcroix and Michael Pinsky and by the artistic advisory board: Hubertus von Amelunxen, Eve Chiapello, Paul di Felice, René Kockelkorn and Charles Müller.

Twelve artists will be selected to present their work in Belval and be interviewed by the artistic directors and the artistic advisory board. Six artists will finally be awarded a production residency.
