Mierle Laderman Ukeles (US) is a conceptual artist living in New York. Her manifesto, “Maintenance Art—Proposal for an Exhibition“ (1969), declared all maintenance work, all service as art, from the very personal kind that comes with being a mother and running a household, through public sanitation work, to earth maintenance. Since 1977, Ukeles has been the official unsalaried Artist in Residence at the New York City Department of Sanitation, a position she still holds, where she has realized several long term projects. Currently she is working on creating LANDING, a permanent public environment for Freshkills Park in New York City, formerly the largest municipal landfill in the world, now being turned into a park.
