Gideon Mendel is considered one of the world’s leading contemporary photographers. Born in Johannesburg in 1959, he studied psychology and African history at the University of Cape Town.
After graduation, he became a freelance photographer and was part of the younger generation of photographers engaged in struggles. In particular, he documented the change and conflict in South Africa in preparation for the release of Nelson Mandela.
Since 2007 he has worked on the project ‘Drowning World’ which refers to climate change and which led him to travel to many parts of the globe affected by floods. During COP21, his pictures will be presented in famous locations of Paris, creating a contrast between the outdoor site of the exhibition and the theme of the photographs taken in 10 countries over the past eight years.
